History: Washington state land was home to many Native American tribes before the arrival of European explorers. In the early 1800s, the area was shared by US and Great Britain, until the Oregon Treaty granted control of the region to the United States in 1846. Washington was then incorporated into the Oregon Territory along with Idaho, parts of Wyoming and Montana, and Oregon. In 1853, Oregon withdrew from the incorporated territory and the Washington Territory was created. Washington was admitted into the Union on November 11, 1889, as the 42nd member state. Washington is the 18th largest state by area and the 13th most populated in the US. The state is 240 miles in width and 360 miles in length.
