History: The Mississippi area was ruled by Spanish, French and British colonial governments throughout the 18th century. After the American Revolutionary War, Britain ceded the area to the U.S., and it became the 20th state on December 10, 1817. On January 9, 1861, Mississippi seceded from the Union to join the Confederate States. It returned to the Union on February 23, 1870. Mississippi’s 1890 Constitution discouraged corporate industrial development in favor of rural agriculture, a legacy that would slow the state’s progress for years. In 2005, a public private partnership called “Momentum Mississippi” was adopted to promote development of economic and employment opportunities. Mississippi is ranked 32nd in size of all states at 48,430 sq. miles, and is 170 miles in width and 340 miles in length.

- On April 25, 1866, at Friendship Cemetery in Columbus, Mississippi, a group of ladies placed flowers on soldier’s graves. As a result, Americans celebrate “Memorial Day” each year, an annual observance of the war dead.
