History: In 1629, King of England Charles I established the Province of Carolina, an area covering what is now South and North Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee. In 1729, North and South Carolina became separate colonies. South Carolina prospered from the fertile land, harbors, and trade in deerskin, lumber and beef. By the second half of the 1700s, South Carolina was one of the richest of the Thirteen Colonies. In May 1788, South Carolina ratified the U.S. Constitution, becoming the 8th state to join the Union. Early in the 20th Century, South Carolina developed a thriving textile industry. It also converted its agriculture from cotton to more profitable crops. Tourism also contributes to the state’s economy due to its long Atlantic Ocean coastline and beach resorts. South Carolina is ranked 40th in size of all states at 32,030 sq. miles, and is 200 miles in width and 260 miles in length.

  • In the last 25 years, the city of Myrtle Beach, located on the beach of South Carolina, has developed into the premier resort destination on the East Coast.
  • More than 2,000 animals thrive in recreated natural habitats, with no bars or cages, at the Riverbanks Zoological Park in Columbia, South Carolina.
  • Incorporated in 1895, the town of Smyrna is the smallest town in South Carolina, consisting of approximately 0.7 sq. miles. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the estimated 2018 population is 55.
  • There are over 4,000 rhesus monkeys on Morgan Island, South Carolina (also called Monkey Island). The island is not a tourist attraction, the only humans allowed on the island are the researchers who tag the animals for research purposes.
